Domain Name Appraisal Scam

Friday, February 15th, 2008

After buying a couple of new domains, I received a suspicious email from a Richard Chavez who claimed to be interested in purchasing one of them as an investment. At first he simply asked how much I wanted for the domain and whether I had received any offers on it yet (I found this strange since I has just purchased the domain in question and just put the listing up on afternic.com… and the price was clearly shown on my parked page.)

After I told him my asking price, he then insisted that I have the domain name appraised so that we would both know the fair market value of the domain so that he would know whether it was a good deal or not. He even sent a link to a fake discussion forum where everyone recommended one particular appraisal site. Very clever. I told him that it’s HIS responsibility to determine whether the domain was a good investment or not, not mine.

After another email insisting that I purchase an appraisal, I did a Google search and discovered that many other people have been scammed by this guy. Here are a couple of links that I came across:

So, the moral of the story: If someone insists that you buy a domain appraisal, red warning flags should go up! After all, when you invest in real estate or equities, it’s the BUYER’S responsibility to research/evaluate/appraise said property, not the seller!

NameCheap revoking domains and blocking new accounts without any reason or informing

Friday, February 15th, 2008

As a new customer of NameCheap.com, I correctly signed up for an
account on 02-02-2008, all went perfectly ok.
Then a week later I ordered 3 .Com domains and 3 .Info Domains, All
went ok.. I transfered money from my correct creditcard in my account
at namecheap, I ordered the domians and all payments went ok. Also
were the 6 domains registered correctly and succesfully at my name and
account. I got a correct confirmation from namecheap AND all domains
were visible on my name in WHOIS.
SO far so good.
BUT!!! The next day, completely OUT-OF-THE_BLUE I got a oneline email
saying my transaction was revoked . Dot, no other information at all.
SO I logged in to namecheap and found my ACCOUNT WAS BLOCKED by
namecheap.
ALSO..WHOIS revealed ALL my correctly and legally purchased and PAID
domains were suddenly no longer registered on my name (??)

Lowest-priced privacy-enabled domain registration?

Friday, February 15th, 2008
I’ve been a big fan of Enom…I purchase through an Enom reseller @ $8.70 a domain and love the included DNS service. But the “ID Protect” feature is an additional $10/yr per domain.

What are some lower-priced alternatives out there for privacy-enabled domain registration? (preferably with DNS hosting included).
